Nikhil Nair and Priya Rajan met through the Mumbai indie film circuit. Nikhil had spent years building early-stage consumer products in media-tech. Priya had spent several years on NLP systems and narrative structure analysis for Indian language content. They knew different sides of the same problem.
Both had watched friends abandon screenwriting. Not from lack of ideas. The ideas were there, often brilliant. From structural paralysis. The unresolvable second act that kept folding back on itself. The dialogue that read flat on the page and nobody could say exactly why. The scene that felt wrong but had been rewritten five times and was now worse.
The tools available were either formatting software (correct your slug lines, organize your pages) or generic AI writing assistants that produced serviceable English but nothing that understood how a Bollywood three-act played differently from a Western one, or how an OTT series episode needed to hold both the episode arc and the season arc simultaneously.
Mugafi is the tool they wish had existed. Founded in 2023, the company received angel backing in January 2026. We are still a small team, still close to writers, still testing every new feature with the people who use it for real work.
